EXECUTIVE PANEL: Moving Faster: Managing your "Pacers" to Expedite your Digital Transformation

Wayne Shurts, EVP & CTO, Sysco

Steve Trautman, Principal and Founder, The Steve Trautman Co.

Moderator: Dan Roberts, President & CEO, Ouellette & Associates Consulting, Inc.

As EVP and CTO at Sysco Foods, Wayne Shurts both sits on the board and leads his team guided by the board and CEO's direction.  In both capacities, he lives with one key question that is familiar to every leader in the world:  What can you do to execute our strategy faster?  In addition to leading an agile transformation, Wayne has invested in methodically managing his talent risk so that he can ensure every strategy is staffed with the right combination of business acumen, technical skills and capacity.

With clear, measurable talent risk data and a framework for talking about it, his leadership team can make decisions quickly and then use that same framework to communicate the plan down to the front line employees who need to execute.  Along the way, Wayne's leadership team can see unique individuals who end up being "pacers" - key individuals who have such unique knowledge and experience that they are needed everywhere and can be the reason critical initiatives flounder.

Wayne has implemented a methodical approach to knowledge transfer to address these pacers and that same knowledge transfer solution is used to onboard new associates, manage inconsistencies between teams, ensure agile adoption is measurably progressing, and prepare for the eventual retirement of key associates.  Embedding knowledge transfer and talent risk into Sysco BT's DNA means they're not only ready for all the changes coming their way, they can be out front as innovative anticipators leading the way.

Leaders who build their skills on a strong foundation of courage have a significant advantage for successfully driving innovation to create value to their organization. Today’s CIO must be prepared to embrace strategic innovation while simplifying IT and bringing legacy operations and applications into the future. To accomplish this, the CIO must be strategically aligned with the CEO and the board.

This session will address the new and dynamic mindset a CIO must employ to lead with courage and drive innovation.
