  • Steve Trautman
    Principal and Founder
    The Steve Trautman Co.

Steve Trautman wrote the book on knowledge transfer and now he has written the book on talent risk management.  His practical, data-driven ideas on knowledge transfer have been used by blue-chip companies around the globe for over 20 years and provide the backbone of his fresh insights on talent risk. These ideas apply up the chain of command—from the front-line to the boardroom—and work across generations, geographies, job functions, and industries.

He knows both sides of the talent management problem, having been a talent manager and a line executive.  As a young project manager working at Microsoft, Steve began solving talent-related business problems as a response to the intense on-the-job training needs of his rapidly growing technical team. He cofounded a department at Microsoft that provided training and knowledge transfer, and later left to form his own knowledge transfer and consulting company. Expedia then asked Steve to become general manager of their advertising unit—a $20-million business—which he ran until his own growing consulting company required him to return full time.

Steve is known for his high-energy style that combines humor, street smarts, and boardroom wisdom that deliver real answers to tough problems.  You won’t be bored and you won’t find yourself wading through a bunch of fluff to get to the good stuff—concepts that can be explained in minutes and implemented within hours.

Steve is also the author of Teach What You Know: A Practical Leader’s Guide to Knowledge Transfer through Peer Mentoring and The Executive Guide to High-Impact Talent Management.

EXECUTIVE DISCUSSION: Taking a Data-Driven, Bottom-up Look at Talent

Bob Gentile, VP Information Technology, Qualcomm

Steve Trautman, Principal and Founder, The Steve Trautman Co.

Moderator: Dan Roberts, President & CEO, Ouellette &  Associates Consulting, Inc.

In her first two years as SVP and CIO at Qualcomm, Mary Gendron has had to take on the big, transformational challenges that are familiar to every CIO… Challenges such as reorganizations, IT transformations, and strategy pivots due to a rapidly changing marketplace.

With each of these challenges, she faces one key question that is familiar to every CIO in the world:  What can we do to execute faster?

To prepare for these transformations, Mary invested in methodically managing her talent risk.  She wanted to ensure every aspect of her organization would be staffed with the right combination of business acumen, technical skills, capacity and culture.  With clear, measurable talent risk data and a framework for talking about it, her global leadership team makes decisions quickly and then uses that same framework to communicate the plan down to the front-line employees who need to execute.

Along the way, Mary’s leadership team also has visibility into unique individuals who end up being “pacers” – key individuals who have such unique knowledge and experience that they are needed everywhere and can be the reason critical initiatives flounder.  Mary continues to implement a methodical approach to knowledge transfer to reduce overreliance on these pacers and end their workflow bottlenecks.  That same knowledge transfer solution is used to onboard new employees, manage inconsistencies between teams, ensure adoption of new systems, and prepare for any new challenges.  Embedding talent risk management and knowledge transfer into Qualcomm IT’s DNA means they’re not only ready for all the changes coming their way, they can be out front as innovative anticipators leading the way.

Trace3 provides solutions that reduce complexity within your IT infrastructure by simplifying data management, simplifying virtualization, and accelerating the network. Our specialty is customizing the solution to allow you to leverage your existing investments while increasing utilization of human capital and equipment. At Trace3, we are very selective in both the people we hire and the companies with whom we partner. Most of our employees have over 15 years experience in the industry and have delivered solutions for multiple Fortune 500 companies. Our partner strategy also focuses around selectiveness. You will find that Trace3's solutions partners do not have much overlap in product lines. We pick the top company in a technology area then make sure it adds value to our total solution offering. When we find those solutions, we commit with all we have. We train both sales and engineering resources to become as competent with the product as the manufacturers themselves. Frequently our ability to see how a product interacts with the other areas of an infrastructure can make us better than the manufacturer at showing customers the value solutions can have for their operations.
