  • Geoffrey Aranoff
    Vice President, Information Security
    Western Digital Corporation

    Geoff Aranoff joined Western Digital in February, 2016 as the Vice President, Information Security. In this role Mr. Aranoff is the head of information security and is responsible for developing and implementing the enterprise security strategy that protects the electronic assets and the supporting infrastructure that includes the manufacturing and engineering systems, corporate systems, and intellectual property. His organization continually evaluates the ongoing internal and external risks to Western Digital and adopts long and short-term strategies to mitigate risks and threats within an appropriate budget.  Mr. Aranoff leads the organization responsible for adopting and enforcing policies for internal and external risk management, IT security including network, application, endpoint, and storage security.   

    Mr. Aranoff was previously the Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) for Broadcom Corporation where he initiated and built the information security program.  Mr. Aranoff developed enterprise security strategies that provided the necessary monitoring and controls for Broadcom’s intellectual property (IP), as well as facilitated electronic discovery for litigations and electronic forensics for internal and external inquiries and investigations. Mr. Aranoff also served 6 years in the United State Marine Corp Reserves and was activated for Desert Storm in 1990.  

  • Todd Barnum

    Todd Barnum is the Chief Information Security Officer for GoPro in San Mateo California.  In this role, he leads the information security team, and helps GoPro secure its critical information assets.

    Prior to GoPro, Todd spent time at two consulting firms, KPMG LLP, and Forrester Research.  In both positions Todd led Information Security Consulting Practices.   

    Prior to these consultant gigs, Todd was the Vice President and Chief Information Security Officer at Warner Bros Entertainment in Burbank California.  At the same time Todd also had the pleasure of serving Warner Bros as the Vice President of Enterprise Architecture, and was responsible for architecting and securing the transition from and entirely insourced IT model to one that was entirely outsourced and off-shored. 

    Prior to Warner Bros, Todd spent 8 years at AMGEN, headquartered in Los Angeles where he served as Corporate Director and Chief Information Security Officer. 

    Early in his career, Todd learned the details of information security as a Naval Officer managing some of the Navy’s largest telecommunication systems.  Todd got his Masters in Telecommunications from the United States Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey California, and his Bachelors from the University of Hawaii. 

    Todd is also an Adjunct Professor at California Luther University where he’s taught computer science courses since 2001.  Todd also served as a Board member of the Ventura County YMCA, and was a part Orange County’s Big Brother Big Sister Program.

  • Jason Callahan

    Jason Callahan has over 25 years of Information Security and Technology leadership experience a host of enterprises, including Fortune 150 companies, the Department of Defense, Financial Institutions, and Life Sciences and Energy corporations. He has a demonstrated, authentic record of developing high-performance organizations. 

    Jason is currently serving in two professional capacities: Firstly, as the Chief Information Security Officer (CISO), he is responsible for developing the enterprise security program strategy and execution, while also defining the security standards for Illumina’s high-tech products and cloud-based solutions. Jason is additionally serving as the head of Global Infrastructure & Operations, in which he is responsible for supporting all facets of enterprise technology platforms and High Performance Computing.

    Jason began his career in the United States Air Force, where he held both physical and information security functions. After leaving the Air Force, he went on to launch a successful private cyber security consulting firm, before co-founding the security program at the world’s largest biotechnology company. 

    Jason received a Master of Business Administration from the University of Washington's Foster School of Business and a bachelor’s degree in IT. He serves on the Board of Directors for the San Diego CISO Round Table and is the vice-chairman on the Board of Directors for Villa Musica, a non-profit musical arts education center for the entire San Diego County student population. Jason is also an advisor for Columbia Universities Technology Masters program.

    John Caruthers has been with the FBI since 1992, when he was hired in Washington, D.C. as an ITS. He became an FBI Agent in 1999. During his time in the FBI, John has supported the White Water investigation in LR, AK; investigated the Arellano-Felix Mexican drug cartel; served as San Diego’s Innocent Images coordinator; completed 2 assignments to FBI Headquarters’ Cyber Division; served as the FBI’s primary ICS/SCADA Threat Coordinator; and served overseas in Russia, Ukraine and The Netherlands. SSA Caruthers is currently serving as Supervisory Special Agent of the San Diego Division’s National Security Cyber Squad.

    Bob Concannon is a Senior Client Partner within the San Francisco office of Korn Ferry. He is a member of the Firm’s Global Technology Market. His portfolio clients have included well-established companies like Microsoft, Oracle, 3Com, Cisco and Nokia, and a host of start-up companies funded by tier-1 venture capital. He has completed over 500 search projects in his career with many of those projects reaching successful IPOs. Published and quoted often in The Wall Street Journal, San Jose Mercury News, CFO and CIO Magazines, as well as being featured twice on ABC’s World News Tonight with Peter Jennings in their Silicon Valley report, Mr. Concannon has served as an expert on Silicon Valley trends for over 15 years. He has been a guest lecturer at The University of California Berkeley and Stanford University. He has a bachelor’s degree from the University of the Pacific.

    Bob’s career spans 30 years and many disciplines in the field of Information Technology Support, Products and Services. After graduating from the University of Arizona with a B.S. in Business and MIS,  Bob started with Motorola in Phoenix, Arizona as a Systems Programmer and Administrator.  Bob then joined Apple as a Field Systems Engineer and eventually moved into a position of Account Executive calling on large enterprise customers. Bob returned to Motorola and over the next 16 years progressed his career through multiple IT and business positions including IT Contracts Management, Business Startup Leadership roles (Display technologies, Lifesciences), Enterprise Middleware Systems, Global IT Infrastructure management and Commercial Software Product Management.

    In 2010, Bob joined Qualcomm as the Vice President of Enterprise Applications where he leads a global team of over 400 employees and 200 contractors supporting business operations, customer and supply chain systems. In addition, Bob was the acting CIO for Qualcomm during a recent CIO transition in 2016.

    Bob has participated on various industry and education boards that include university, vendor and non-profit companies.

    Qualcomm is headquartered in San Diego California and is one of the most predominate firms in the mobile computing and semiconductor industry with a customer list that includes all of the top mobile device manufactures in the world.

    Karen Gibson joined Quidel in April, 2015 as the VP of Information Services.   Quidel creates rapid diagnostic tools for the clinical setting.   In this role,  she is focused on streamlining operations and using information and technology to enable new market opportunities.  

    A recognized industry leader,  Karen is passionate about using information technology to improve healthcare and has had roles throughout the life sciences space.    

    Formerly the CIO for McKesson’s Specialty Health division,  Karen’s team provided all IT services for an integrated network of over 500 community-based oncology clinics, specialty pharmacies, and diagnostic laboratories.   Prior to McKesson,  Karen was the first CIO for Life Technologies,  a global life sciences company providing scientific tools for research and drug discovery.   During her tenure, her team successfully implemented a global transformation strategy that included an industry recognized e-commerce system that “consumerized” the purchase of scientific research products.     Before Life Technologies, Karen was the CIO and e-business leader of GE Medical Systems IT – a business that delivered hardware and software solutions to healthcare providers around the world. She ran the IT organization,  as well as a services team providing cloud-based radiology image storage.     Karen has also held leadership roles within other GE divisions and Ethicon Endo-Surgery (a Johnson & Johnson company).

    Karen holds a B.S. in Computer Technology from Purdue University, as well as an M.B.A. from Ohio University.

    Tony uses his operating experience from being a CEO, financial background as a CPA and CA, and technical knowledge from the work that he has done for Tech companies to drill down and understand at a nuanced level what his clients are seeking to achieve as they build their teams. He has written numerous papers on technology leadership and the challenges facing technology leaders today and authors a blog, ‘Resources for the Modern CIO” (www.tonyleng.com).

    The core of Tony’s consulting has been with senior leaders who are seeking to transform their organizations as they face a future of rapid change, digitization, regulation, shifting markets, and increasingly connected and informed customers.

    Prior to joining HGST, Steve was CIO for Amylin Pharmaceuticals, a leading provider of drugs for the treatment of diabetes.  Steve was previously the CIO of Proflowers.com, a high-volume e-commerce retailer, and the VP of IT for Global Enterprise Applications at Invitrogen (now Thermo Fisher Scientific).  Prior to that, he held various leadership positions at companies including Memec (Avnet), Gateway and Qualcomm. 

    A recognized industry expert, Steve has received numerous industry awards. Most recently, he was recognized among Computerworld’s top 100 IT leaders for 2016.     As a volunteer leader many times over, Mr. Sheth is on the HIMSS Southern California Chapter Board (completed his one-year term as President 6/30/09), the University of Southern California (USC) Asian Pacific Alumni Association (President: 2006-2007), the USC Marshall Alumni Association National Board, and the USC Marshall Partners Board.

    George has a B.A. degree from Occidental College and graduated Summa Cum Laude from the University of Southern California with an M.B.A. in International Business.

Contributing to the growth of the local IT community has always been an important part of SIM San Diego’s mission. An important tactic to achieve that growth is to encourage students at our local Universities to consider a career in Information Technology. Two key parts of that effort were to invite students to our events (let them see technology executives in action) and to award yearly scholarships to students that show promise in becoming our technology executives of the future. This year SIM San Diego is going to award a minimum of $25,000.

In her first two years as SVP and CIO at Qualcomm, Mary Gendron has had to take on the big, transformational challenges that are familiar to every CIO… Challenges such as reorganizations, IT transformations, and strategy pivots due to a rapidly changing marketplace.

With each of these challenges, she faces one key question that is familiar to every CIO in the world:  What can we do to execute faster? 

To prepare for these transformations, Mary invested in methodically managing her talent risk.  She wanted to ensure every aspect of her organization would be staffed with the right combination of business acumen, technical skills, capacity and culture.  With clear, measurable talent risk data and a framework for talking about it, her global leadership team makes decisions quickly and then uses that same framework to communicate the plan down to the front-line employees who need to execute. 

Along the way, Mary’s leadership team also has visibility into unique individuals who end up being “pacers” – key individuals who have such unique knowledge and experience that they are needed everywhere and can be the reason critical initiatives flounder.  Mary continues to implement a methodical approach to knowledge transfer to reduce overreliance on these pacers and end their workflow bottlenecks.  That same knowledge transfer solution is used to onboard new employees, manage inconsistencies between teams, ensure adoption of new systems, and prepare for any new challenges.  Embedding talent risk management and knowledge transfer into Qualcomm IT’s DNA means they’re not only ready for all the changes coming their way, they can be out front as innovative anticipators leading the way.
