2020 Global Technology Executives Who Matter Awards

Barbara Cooper

Former CIO - Retired - Toyota Motor North America

Barbara Cooper was group vice president and chief information officer for Toyota Motor North America for sixteen years retiring in 2012.  She was responsible for the strategy, development and operation of all systems and technology and left a legacy of some of the most innovative and market competitive technology solutions in the industry.  In addition to her CIO role, she was also responsible for leading the University of Toyota focusing on professional development for Toyota staff and training programs for Toyota and Lexus dealer technicians. 

Prior to Toyota, she was group vice president and CIO for MicroAge Corp., CIO for Maricopa County in Phoenix, AZ and also served as its County Manager.  She was vice president of technology for American Express, and director of information systems for Miller & Paine department stores.  Barbara remains one of the single most recognized CIO’s in the IT industry having been named to six Top 100 CIO awards globally, in addition to numerous awards from a variety of IT trade associations and industry publications, culminating in being named to the CIO Hall of Fame in 2007.  She was also recognized in the automotive industry achieving Automotive News Top 100 Women five times.

Barbara holds a bachelor's degree in education from the University of Nebraska and attended the University of Oslo in Oslo, Norway graduate studies program.  She was the founder of three professional women’s networks during her career including the first professional women’s network at Toyota.

She works part time as an executive coach for CIOs and senior IT management since her retirement. 

The History

In 2019, HMG Strategy introduced the Technology Executives to Watch Awards to recognize the top-performing Chief Information Officers, Chief Information Security Officers, Senior Technology Leaders, Venture Capitalists and Search Executives who have demonstrated unparalleled leadership in areas such as Innovation, Business Transformation and Digital Disruption.

In 2020, we are extending our recognition program to honor exemplary technology leaders who are delivering exceptional value to their organizations: The HMG Strategy 2020 Global Technology Executives Who Matter Awards.

The Criteria

These annual awards recognize the top-performing Chief Information Officers, Chief Technology Officers, Chief Information Security Officers, Venture Capitalists, Search Industry Executives and other Senior Technology Leaders who have demonstrated outstanding leadership in the following areas: InnovationBusiness TransformationCourageous LeadershipTalent Development and Digital Disruption

The awards also recognize legendary technology leaders with two new award distinctions: the Elite Alumni and Lifetime Achievement awards. 

The Elite Alumni award will showcase the courageous leadership and commitment to innovation and business transformation that earns technology executives perennial acknowledgment. Recipients in the Elite Alumni category join an exclusive list of premier global technology leaders who have been recognized by HMG Strategy in the past. The program honors those top IT leaders who have delivered unparalleled value to their organizations in innovation, business transformation, courageous leadership, digital disruption and talent development.

Meanwhile, the Lifetime Achievement award recognizes those leaders who have led a long and distinguished career. Recipients in this category have demonstrated an unwavering commitment to the technology industry in various positions and exhibited excellence throughout the duration of their career.

The Details
