HMG Lead, Innovate, Disrupt Tech Talk:  The Future is Exciting, But You Have to Get There

Jim Love, CIO and Chief Content Officer, IT World Canada

As we move onto what IDC calls the "second phase of the third platform" we realize that progress is not linear.  If you thought the pace of change was fast before this, buckle up - we are about to move at what will seem like light speed compared to the past decade.  Social, mobile, analytics and cloud are joined with new waves - artificial intelligence, blockchain, distributed open structures act not as additions, but as catalysts that will accelerate innovation and transformation in an "everything is everywhere" world.

The next five years will be a period of incredible change.  Digital transformation will truly arrive and bring with an exciting era where ideas and even dreams are fulfilled. At least it will be for those who survive it.  The good news is that today's technology leaders will be an essential part of that survival.  We can and will truly make the shift from technical support to strategic guide - if we plan for it now.   Yes, the future is uncertain, but as someone once said, the best way to predict the future is to invent it.

A strategic direction is essential to making the right technological investments. Not every trend is worth pursing, but missing the ones that are can be costly. Most importantly, using a business outcomes framework can help you create the foundation for your adoption strategy. Determine which trends are worth your attention, chart an adoption course and build a business case for your stakeholders. Info-Tech will dive into four trends that represent the convergence of several previously trending technologies:
