EVP, Chief Information & Technology Officer and Board Director - CarMax


Shamim Mohammad is the Senior Vice President, Chief Information and Technology Officer at Richmond-based CarMax, the nation’s largest retailer of used cars. He leads CarMax’s technology organization and is responsible for the strategic use of technology throughout the company. He reports directly to CarMax’s CEO and is a key member of the senior executive team.

CarMax is a high-integrity customer experience company known for disrupting the automotive industry by providing customers the transparent and no-haggle experience they deserve. CarMax is disrupting the industry a second time: through technology-fueled experiences and by empowering customers to buy a car on their terms, whether that’s completely from home, in store, or a seamless combination of both. Shamim and his teams have been instrumental in CarMax’s digital transformation in all areas of the business, including bringing a true omni-channel experience to CarMax customers, developing world-class supply chain capabilities and leveraging machine learning and artificial intelligence to power the business. As a culture ambassador, Shamim is particularly proud of CarMax’s recognition as one of Fortune Magazine’s 100 Best Companies to Work For®, sixteen years in a row.

Shamim serves on the Board for the YMCA of Greater Richmond, which serves 225,000+ people across 17 locations. He also serves on the advisory boards of RVATech, CodeRVA and the VCU Information Systems department. Shamim previously served on the boards of the National Kidney Foundation (Dallas), the Society for Information Management (Dallas and Boston) and the Institute of Management Accountants (Dallas).

Shamim is a sought-after thought leader and speaker, and his work has been referenced in some of the top media outlets. Shamim has been recognized for leadership and excellence in technology. In 2020, MIT Sloan selected Shamim as the recipient of the highly respected CIO Leadership Award, which recognizes CIOs who lead their organizations to deliver exemplary levels of business value through the innovative use of technology. In 2019, Shamim was recognized as the Capital CIO of the Year by the Capital CIO Leadership Association. The UVA’s McIntire School honored Shamim with the Technology Leader award in 2019. Finally, in 2017, CarMax was recognized as one of the CIO Magazine’s Top 100 companies for innovative use of technology to drive business value.

Shamim earned his MBA from Northwestern University (Kellogg). He received his BS in Computer Science from Angelo State University. He is a registered CPA in Illinois.

A father of two college girls, Shamim enjoys travel, golf, and is passionate about improving health and education access in the United States and around the world.
