SpaceX Falcon 9 Launches All-Civilian Crew into Orbit
Congratulations to Elon Musk and his amazing team of innovators and inventors! Another important step forward in the commercialization of space travel has occurred, and I want to offer my heartfelt praise to everyone involved in the effort.
“On Wednesday, September 15 at 8:02 p.m. EDT, 00:02 UTC on September 16, SpaceX’s Falcon 9 successfully launched the Inspiration4 mission – the world’s first all-civilian human spaceflight to orbit – from historic Launch Complex 39A at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida,” according to a statement released by SpaceX. “Inspiration4 is commanded by Jared Isaacman, founder and CEO of Shift4 Payments and an accomplished pilot and adventurer. Joining him are Medical Officer Hayley Arceneaux, a physician assistant at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital® and pediatric cancer survivor; Mission Specialist Chris Sembroski, an Air Force veteran and aerospace data engineer; and Mission Pilot Dr. Sian Proctor, a geoscientist, entrepreneur, and trained pilot.”
The crew “will spend three days aboard their 13-foot-wide Crew Dragon capsule in orbit at a 350-mile altitude,” according to a CNN Business report.
New iPhone Adds ‘Refinement’
Sometimes a great product doesn’t need to be reinvented – it just needs a little refinement. A prime example of this phenomenon is the Apple iPhone.
“For the past ten years, Tim Cook’s greatest accomplishment as Apple CEO has been vastly more of the same. More iPhones, more iPhone accessories, more apps, and so much more money. While the Mac and iPad have occasionally fallen into disrepair, the company keeps coming back with new reasons to buy its greatest hits every year — and this year’s iPhone 13 event is a near-perfect case study in how far refinement can take you,” writes Sean Hollister of The Verge.
Microsoft Takes Big Step Towards Eliminating Use of Passwords
The days of writing down your passwords may soon be over. But don’t throw away your sticky notes yet.
“Though a completely passwordless future is still a ways off, you’ll soon be able to take a big step in that direction by nuking the password on your Microsoft account. The company announced (Wednesday) that the password-free features it already offers to corporate customers will now be available to everyone,” writes Lily Hay Newman of WIRED. “Over the next few weeks, Microsoft will roll out support for a passwordless life in the Microsoft Authenticator app and the biometric-based Hello login service for Windows. You’ll be able to set things up so you use a biometric like a fingerprint or face scan, a hardware authentication token, or a verification code sent to your phone or email as an alternative to a password.”
