HMG Strategy’s Global CIO & CISO Executive Leadership Alliance (CELA) Session Highlights Strategies for Reducing Costs While Driving Innovation in Difficult Times
It was an incredibly busy and productive week, packed with high-value HMG Strategy leadership summits and events, including Tuesday’s 2022 San Diego Technology Executive Leadership Summit in Partnership with SIM San Diego and Thursday’s 2022 Silicon Valley CIO Executive Leadership Summit.
On Wednesday, we hosted our Global CIO & CISO Executive Leadership Alliance (CELA) meeting in Silicon Valley, and I’d like to focus on some of the insights generated by that excellent gathering.
We had a lively discussion about the unrelenting pressure on technology executives to reduce costs in the current economic climate. With technology spending as one of the largest if not the largest area of capital expenditures in most companies, many CIOs and technology leaders are being asked by their CEOs and CFOs to find ways to cut costs.
We also had a fascinating and useful conversation about the evolving role of technology leaders as pioneers of consistent innovation, including how to strike a balance between cost containment while fostering innovation. We agreed that companies need to continue investing in innovation and invention – even when the economic picture seems uncertain. Research from McKinsey & Company and other organizations reveals that companies which continue to invest in innovation during a downturn outperform their peers.
I genuinely enjoy these CELA sessions which are intimate gatherings with top-tier CIOs, CDOs and CISOs to brainstorm together on strategies to lead, reimagine and reinvent their companies’ business models and go-to-market strategies, to become boardroom-ready, to strengthen their personal branding and other critical aspects of being a world-class technology leader. CELA members consistently share with us that these sessions inspire them and really bring out some of our best ideas. Because the participants are all senior leaders and executives, there’s a true sense of comradeship and collaboration.
