Watching the videos of the SpaceX’s Crew Dragon capsule docking smoothly with the International Space Station early Sunday was a genuine thrill and delight. In a week of dark news, the success of the mission was a strong ray of hope and a beacon of inspiration.
I believe that I’m speaking for many of us when I say the success of the Crew Dragon left us feeling empowered, happy and proud of our collective abilities as human beings to accomplish deeds of truly magnificent scale and scope.
If you haven’t already seen them, please watch the videos of veteran astronauts Douglas Hurley and Robert Behnken broadcasting from orbit. I am sure the videos will make you smile.
“The historic mission marks a major milestone in NASA’s push to end the agency’s sole reliance on Russian Soyuz spacecraft for carrying astronauts to and from the lab complex, the first piloted launch to orbit by a privately owned and operated spacecraft since the dawn of the space age,” writes William Harwood of CBS News.
From my perspective, the success of the mission highlights the pivotal role of technology in modern culture. At a moment in which the idea of globalization is under scrutiny, global initiatives such as these show the power of working together. Solving global challenges requires international collaboration; the SpaceX mission reminds us why that’s true.
And of course, I applaud the vision and effort of Elon Musk, whose intense focus made it possible for the U.S. to launch its own manned spacecraft into orbit again after a long hiatus. Frankly, it would be difficult to imagine something like this happening without Musk’s driving force behind it.
For me, this reinforces the message of innovation, reimagination and reinvention that I’ve been writing and speaking about for many years. All of us in the technology industry can be rightfully proud of SpaceX’s success. We’re all a part of the larger mission, which is applying technology to make our world a safer, healthier, smarter and more prosperous place for everyone.
